What do Symptoms Tell You?

If your engine was losing oil and lost enough to make the oil light come on, is the problem with the oil light (symptom) or with the leak (cause)? Be careful how you define the problem! If you believe the problem is the light (symptom), you could cover it with black tape so you couldn't see it, and think you have fixed the problem (oil leak). No light = no symptom = no problem. Right? WRONG! Ignoring your car's warning system (symptoms) by covering them up will only allow the underlying cause (the oil leak) to worsen until your engine suffers irrepairable damage, or needs expensive and extensive repairs.

A similar thing happens in our bodies when we take drugs to cover up the pain or some other symptom. Rarely does treating a symptom improve the underlying cause. In fact, ignoring symptoms usually allows the underlying cause to get worse. In today's busy world, it is often tempting to settle for short-term symptom relief by taking drugs rather than listen and attend to the fact your body is telling you something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Here's another example: The feeling of hunger is a symptom. That is your body's way of telling you it needs nutrition. You can relieve the symptom by eating a Big Mac. Or, you could eat a healthy, nutritious meal. Either way, you have relieved the symptom, but only good nutrition really satisfies what your body is asking for.

Spinal disease and decay is best prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle habits like regular exercise, good hydration, good nutrition and regular chiropractic check ups. That is the best use of chiropractic.

If it is too late for prevention, getting the cause of symptoms fixed as soon as possible sets you up for better results and a lifetime of better health. Chiropractic allows your body to function more normally, to heal, and to serve you well for the rest of your life.
